A Message from KNOWN Coworking to Our Community

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of KNOWN Coworking at the end of October 2024. Over the past five years, KNOWN Coworking has been more than just a workspace; it has been a vibrant hub of social and business connections. Our curated programming has fostered a sense of belonging and significantly contributed to the growth of traditionally disenfranchised local minority entrepreneurs, who face numerous barriers in sustaining and scaling their businesses.

Nearly 600 minority-owned businesses in New Haven County have participated in our diverse programming. From show-and-tells, fireside chats, art gallery openings, and networking wine downs, to retail bazaars, podcasts, mentorships, seminars, and technical assistance workshops, KNOWN Coworking has provided invaluable resources. Our flagship business accelerator program, Knownpreneurs, has been particularly impactful, helping 47 selected businesses achieve $5.3 million in sales and an average annual revenue growth of 39% just one year after graduation.

KNOWN Coworking has also been a place where freelancers, well-established small businesses, and remote workers came together—a microcosm of New Haven’s vibrant socio-economic fabric where innovation and inclusivity flourished.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our social mission partners, sponsors, and grantees, as well as our coworking members and clients, the Greater New Haven community, our Knownpreneur graduates, and, last but not least, our dedicated staff, team members, and mentors throughout our history. Your dedication and support have made a significant difference in the lives of many.

Special thanks to Alexandria, Barb, Bob, Christina, Dawn, Elena, Frank, Giulia, Jennifer, Jesse, Jim, Kim, Latina, Leigh, Luis, Maria, Raheem, Rae, Randy, Ramon, Rick, Ron, Roz, Sammi, Shantel, Sven, and Yusuf. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn from so many talented individuals and work alongside organizations that support small businesses in New Haven.

Growing up in Venezuela, I witnessed firsthand how extreme wealth gaps and a lack of opportunities to connect to the right resources contributed to the collapse of democracy and civil society. This experience along with my 20 years doing business in the US inspired me to create a space where minority businesses could connect, showcase their work, learn, and access valuable resources, so after 5 years this has been a very fulfilling journey in my book of entrepreneurial chapters.

In appreciation of so many meaningful times and in recognition of our community and collaborators, I have added a link to our gallery of photos that you can visit [here].

Please note that our work supporting small businesses with technical assistance for NHE3 grants will continue until December of this year.

Thank you all for being a part of our journey.

Warmest regards,

Juan M Salas-Romer
